Standards are provided for algebra I, geometry, algebra II, trigonometry, mathematical analysis, linear algebra, probability and statistics, Advanced Placement probability and statistics, and calculus. Many of the more advanced subjects are not taught in every middle school or high school. Moreover, schools and districts have different ways of combining the subject matter in these various disciplines. For example, many schools combine some trigonometry, mathematical analysis, and linear algebra to form a pre calculus course. Some districts prefer offering trigonometry content with algebra II.
Table 1, "Mathematics Disciplines, by Grade Level," reflects typical grade-level groupings of these disciplines in both integrated and traditional curricula. The lightly shaded region reflects the minimum requirement for mastery by all students. The dark shaded region depicts content that is typically considered elective but that should also be mastered by students who complete the other disciplines in the lower grade levels and continue the study of mathematics.

Course Description
Students in eight grade focus on reading comprehension and vocabulary development. Through the study of different written works, students will learn how to identify figurative language and dissect its meaning. In addition, students will be given strategies on how to compare and contrast the different elements of different materials. Students will build listening, silent reading, and oral reading skills. Studies will come from short passages found in the Bridges to Literature textbook, but also from various novels. Through the study of literary analysis, students will become knowledgeable and successful literary critics. In addition to classwork, students will be expected to read daily at home and complete their book notes every night. Book reports will also be assigned at least once per month with advance notice.

Students in grade eight study the different elements and the types of reactions they undergo in the Chemistry portion of our class. Students will work with different substances to experience firsthand the physical and chemical changes they undergo. In addition, students will be introduced to the periodic table and begin to use it for their scientific development. After students have learned the chemistry of living things, they will move into the Physics portion of Physical Science. Students will learn how different variables affect different factors such as speed, acceleration, velocity and energy. As a culminating activity, students will create their own race cars using their knowledge of forces and motion to build a car that will go the furthest and quickest. By conducting different experiments, students will develop their skills in scientific experimentation, investigation, and analysis.

Course Description:
This course provides students in grade eight the study of ideas, issues, and events from the framing of the Constitution up to World War I, with an emphasis on America's role in the war. After reviewing the development of America's democratic institutions founded on the Judeo-Christian heritage and English parliamentary traditions, particularly the shaping of the Constitution, students trace the development of American politics, society, culture, and economy and relate them to the emergence of major regional differences. They learn about the challenges facing the new nation, with an emphasis on the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War. They make connections between the rise of industrialization and contemporary social and economic conditions.
